WWE SummerSlam Anthology Volume 2 DVD Review

About.com Rating

Unlike WrestleMania and the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam is a truer indicator of where the WWE is at a given time. This volume of the set features 1993 - 1997, what is commonly referred to as the New Generation era for the company. The final matches of the first three discs of this set include such stellar main events as Yokozuna vs. Lex Luger, Undertaker vs. Underfaker, and Diesel vs. Mabel.

Packaging
I always seem to complain about DVD sets that feature discs in sleeves.

My reason for always complaining about this came true with this set as two of the discs in it were cracked. Don't worry though, I tracked down another copy of this set so I was able to watch Diesel vs. Mabel. Maybe the cracked discs were an omen warning me not to watch the '95 and '96 events.

Editing Notes
Nothing major was taken out of this set. The biggest thing I noticed was the F being taken out of the saying WWF.

How many of these matches are available elsewhere? When the complete anthology was released last summer, I made a list of every SummerSlam match that was available on a non-SummerSlam DVD. As of last summer, only eight matches in this set have been released on DVD.

How do these matches hold up over time?
Not too well. From 1993 - 1996, there is a general rule of thumb that can be followed when it comes to watching events from that era. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels put on the great matches and the rest of the show was generally horrible. Thankfully, by the time 1997 rolled around, the WWE began their Attitude era and new stars like Triple H, Steve Austin, and Mick Foley finally got to strut their stuff and put on some good matches to close out this set.

I don't want to harp on how bad this era was, but this DVD set shows why WCW was able to come back from the horrible shape they were in when Flair left the company in '91 and almost put the WWE out of business.

Overall Recommendation
I would avoid this DVD set. The good stuff is available elsewhere and there is nothing else on this set that you should go out of your way to see. For a complete listing of all the matches on this DVD set, make sure to check out the SummerSlam section of the site.
