3 tips to keep on top of it.
Today I realised that I have done no advertising or marketing of my books that I so lovingly turned into e-books over the last few years.
I also realised that the book I'm currently editing has been sitting on my computer gathering dust.
If that was physically possible.
All has come to halt.
And why? Mainly because producing the books, marketing them on the web has involved so much learning that I am crushed by virtual blocks of lead.
If you, like me, have been online pushing books out there, then it wont have taken you long to realise that marketing online is a whole new business and that simply telling your friends, linking to Facebook and doing the odd video simply isn't going to be enough.
So what is enough.
I don't have the answer.
What I do have is finally an understanding that without investing hours of marketing time into the books that are already out there, one might as well imagine them continually being buried deeper and deeper in the virtual void.
Even this morning as I sat at my computer I confirm it has taken me over 5 hours to update links, create new links, mention updates on websites, facebook, Facebook pages, smashwords website etc.
For this takes more time than you want to give it.
And because it is a virtual world out there you know it may or may not make a difference.
Allocation of time is vital.
And there's no way around it.
The minimum time that is needed to invest in marketing your e-book is 3 hours per week.
This means updating your website updating your blog checking your links still work adding links that you think might be of interest Finding new ways to enhance your information or tell the story of your book form a different angle finding ways to change that information into the different formats used on the web: video, audio, articles, blogging, etc There is no way around it.
If you are self-publishing, you are going to have to be your own self-agent as well.
And what does a good agent to? They get you to tell your story in many different ways on many different platforms.
Which is exactly what you are going to have to do.
Put on your agent's hat and think about how to market yourself.
To market on the web, you are going to have to be part of the web.
Whether you like it or not.
It also mean that people are also going to expect to be interested in you as well as your books.
So your presence should include:- YouTube Facebook and Facebook pages for each of your books.
twitter website as a minimum.
It is interesting to note that websites are being seen as quite flat platforms and people are demanding and more interested in interacting.

You need to dedicate time to ensuring that information you have already put online still works and is significant.
You have to find new ways to communicate information about you and your books There is no way to keep entirely sane.
Commitment to the above, and a clear piece of time set aside to do what you can, will stop the irritation and and heavy weight of having your work sitting in virtual space.
