    Disabling Unnecessary Aero Features

    • 1). Right-click on the desktop in an area where the mouse pointer is not over an icon, and click "Personalize."

    • 2). Click "Window Color and Appearance."

    • 3). Click the "Effects" button. The items shown on this screen are some of the most taxing on your computer's video card. Remove the check marks from "Show shadows under menus" and "Show window contents while dragging." Leaving font smoothing enabled is recommended as it helps reduce eye strain. However, it can be disabled if the desktop performance in Vista is still unacceptable.

    • 4). Click "OK" in each window, then close the "Personalization" window.

    • 5). Click the Windows Orb (Start Button). Right-click the "Computer" icon and click "Properties."

    • 6). Click the "Advanced System Settings" link on the left side of the screen.

    • 7). Click the "Settings" button under "Performance."

    • 8). Select the radio button labeled "Adjust for best performance" to disable all of the visual features listed. Alternatively, you may select "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer." Click "OK" to close each open window.

    Disabling Aero on Low-End Computers

    • 1). Right-click on the desktop in an area where the mouse pointer is not over an icon, and click "Personalize."

    • 2). Click "Window Color and Appearance."

    • 3). Select "Windows Vista Basic" under "Color Scheme" to disable the elements of the Aero interface that are most taxing on the computer while retaining the general color scheme, or "Windows Classic" to revert the user interface to one similar to the Windows 2000 interface. "Windows Classic" should be chosen for best performance on very old or low-end computers.

    • 4). Click "OK" to close each open window and close the "Personalization" window.
