Hemorrhoids are often referred to as piles.
Whatever you chose to call them, they can be annoying and very painful.
Hemorrhoids can be compared to varicose veins.
The vein walls in the anus become weak, usually due to continuous straining and pressure.
The walls collapse and fill up with blood which can be very painful.
There are 3 different types of hemorrhoids.
EXTERNAL hemorrhoids are outside of the anus.
When you touch the area, you can actually feel them.
They feel like a swollen lump.
INTERNAL hemorrhoids are as the name implies, they are inside the anus.
There is usually no pain associated with internal hemorrhoids.
You may have the feeling of always needing to go to the toilet.
They deteriorate much faster than external hemorrhoids.
You may see bright red blood in the stool or on the paper.
Also, itching could be present with internal hemorrhoids.
PROLAPSED hemorrhoids are the worst kind to have! The pain can be unbearable and prolapsed hemorrhoids are very hard to get rid of.
In the early stages you can literally push them back up the anus with your finger.
This condition can go one step further and become strangulated.
They can easily become infected.
It is important to know that blood in the stool could be a sign of a much more serious condition and should be discussed with your doctor.
Your doctor will use an anoscope, which is a very thin pipe with a light on one end allowing the doctor to view what is going on.
There is no pain involved in this procedure and can be performed in the doctors office.
Usually the process takes 5 minutes.
The prevention of hemorrhoids starts with eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.
You should also drink plenty of water.
Regular bowel movement is the key to prevention.
