    National Averages

    • According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average home sale price in August 2010 was $248,800. This represents a significant reduction in price since the summer of 2008, just before the housing crisis. The census report of July 2008 lists the average home price at $301,900.

    Major Cities

    • According to the National Association of Realtors, the average home sale price for 2010 in the San Francisco Bay Area was $551,000. This is the highest-priced area in the nation-- lose behind are New York, at $380,436 and Los Angeles at $352,000.

    South

    • In the southern United States homes are much less expensive than in the north. Average home prices for 2010 in Alabama and Kentucky were under $200,000, with many homes priced less than $150,000.
