Florida has some of the highest incidences of teenage fatalities on the road and one of the highest rates of drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The two victims in the case were driving home on a Thursday night after seeing a new movie in the theatre. The 21 year old had been spotted at a few local bars around Palm Beach Gardens and was seen swerving on PGA Blvd. Blowing a.20, the man was way more than twice the legal Blood Alcohol Content allowed for a driver, a.08.
It is believed that the drunk, barely of age driver fell asleep at the wheel while driving at a high rate of speed. He ran the stoplight on PGA and slammed into the Honda Civic of the 18 year old girl and her 17 year old friend. The truck driven by the drunk driver completely crushed the Honda Civic during the intense t-bone collision and both teenagers were killed instantly. Once authorities reached the accident scene, the drunk driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
This incident, not isolated in any regard, should serve as a warning to all drivers who make the choice to drink and drive and to all drivers on the road. If you choose to drink and drive, you risk not only your own life, but the lives of others. It also serves as a warning to all motorists to be vigilant when driving because other drivers can be the real danger to you and your family's safety. The lawsuit was settled with an undisclosed amount going to the families of the victims.
