Many people are looking for different ways to redecorate and redesign their homes. Instead painting your home the same old boring shade of off-white or beige, consider going slightly bolder. Paint your home in bright colors that will look both sophisticated and chic. But don't worry, there are a few tricks to prevent the color for being too much for your eyes.
Bright and Bold
- If you'd like to paint a room in a bright, bold color, first consider the room you'd like to paint. For best results, the room should have high ceilings and/or be on the larger side. Although smaller rooms--like bathrooms--may look nice in a bright color, many people complain that too bright a color in a small room can be suffocating. Also, when painting an entire room a bold color, consider what your accent pieces will be. When the walls are painted a bold color, the furniture and accent pieces should not also be loud. Some popular color schemes are deep cherry red, which works well with black and white furniture and accents, mint green, which works well with chocolate brown, and bright blue, which works well with white.
Bright Color Tricks
- If you're not comfortable with painting a whole room a bright color, there are some things that you can do to tone down the color. Consider wainscoting. Not only is wainscoting elegant and chic, but it also offers a break in the bright color that is painted on the wall. Even a dark, deep red won't seem so dark with a white wainscoting on the bottom portion of the wall. If you don't already have wainscoting in your home, you can purchase some from any home improvement store. If you're looking to save a little money, choose beadboard, which tends to be less expensive than intricate wainscoting. You can also stripe the wall with the bright paint. Using blue painter's tape to stripe the walls, paint every other strip with either a lighter shade of a similar color or the same color in a glossy finish. This will create enough contrast to reduce the brightness of the color. You could also paint the wall in the bright color of your choice, but choose the color in a matte finish.
- If you're not ready for a room painted in a bright, bold color, and you don't want to spend extra money on wainscoting, there is a different way to get the look you want without the money or color commitment. Choose to paint just one wall as an accent wall in one room. Paint or keep the other walls a neutral color, then paint the accent wall in a bold and bright color. Use the biggest wall your living room, the main wall in your family room, or the wall with the fireplace as your accent wall. It will draw the attention to that wall--but in a good way. This is a great way to add a pop of color to any room.
