    • There were approximately 357,740 welders employed in the United States in 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Welders earned a national average salary of $17.61 per hour, or about $36,630 per year. The lowest 10% of welders earned an hourly wage of $11.26, or $23,420 per year, while the top 10% earned an average of $25.20 an hour, or about $52,420 per year. The middle 50% of welders made $16.71 per hour, or about $34,750 per year.

    Highest Paying Industries

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that welders employed in the spectator sports industry sector earned the highest average wages in 2009. These workers made $29.73 per hour, or about $61,830 per year. Welders in the natural gas distribution sector were the second most well-paid, earning an average salary of $26.81 an hour, or about $55,770 per year. Welders in the pipeline transportation of natural gas industry, the fifth highest paying sector, earned an average hourly wage of $26.04, or about $54,150 per year.

    Highest Paying States

    • The five states in which welders had the highest average incomes in 2009 were: Alaska, Hawaii, the District of Columbia, Wyoming and Washington, according to the BLS. Welders in Alaska earned an average wage of $29.59 per hour, or about $61,550 per year. Welders in Hawaii earn significantly less, taking in an average hourly wage of $25.10, or about $52,210 per year. Welders in the fifth highest paying states in 2009, Washington, earned an average salary of $20.75 per hour, or about $43,150 per year.

    Highest Paying Metro Areas

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported that income differed between various cities. Welders in Anchorage, Alaska had the highest average salary in 2009, earning $28.93 per hour, or about $60,180 per year. Welders in Texarkana, Texas earned an average of $28.32 per hour, or about $58,890 per year. The fifth highest paying city, Bremerton, Washington, had average welder salaries of $24.64 per hour, or about $51,260 per year.
