- Members of the Al Naim tribe settled in the Ajman region around the year 1800. In 1820, Ajman became a protectorate of the British Empire. The first industries were fishing, diving and farming.
- The population of Ajman increased through merchant activity throughout the first half of the 20th century. Infrastructure was laid down to facilitate the development of Ajman City into a modern urban metropolis.
- The power of nearby emirates, such as Dubai and Sharjah, promoted andincrease in growth in Ajman. Ajman attracts a great deal of foreign investment due to its relatively free real-estate ownership laws. Ajman is the site of "The Emirates City," a new development which includes new residential areas, shopping centers and hotels.
