What Does the Bible Say About Doing Good?

    • Doing good to others is good for the soul, says the Bible. Even when others may do harm to you or treat you badly, it is important to treat everyone with love. Luke 6:27 says: "But I say unto you which hear, love your enemies, do good to them which hate you." It also states in Romans 12:20 the following: "Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head." This means that we should do good for others regardless of how they treat us. This is crucial for people who believe the Bible holds truth. It makes you feel righteous as you realize that no matter what happens, you did what you felt was right. In the end, our ultimate benefit is going to heaven.

    • God wants his people to do good for the community, to show his love for others through his people and to create a better world for everyone. Doing good for one another starts with one small step and can end up changing moments and even entire lives. Jesus's life consisted of doing good works, and his actions are used as an example of how people should live. If you read through the New Testament, Jesus showed love by healing people and befriending those that were considered unclean.

    • Of course, always doing good comes with a small price. Some people will take advantage of people who are willing to do good. They see kindness as a form of weakness. There will always be someone who thinks you're a pushover, but doing good according to the Bible means doing good even when this happens. However, we must look at other ways to do good in which we are not putting ourselves at risk. Another downside of doing good to everyone is that you may never teach someone how to take care of themselves. They may depend on you for a handout instead of trying to help themselves.

    • When we do good, good things happen. It can be as simple as helping someone study for a test or as involved as feeding the hungry. It's like the saying, "Pay it forward." If we do something good for just one person, they in turn will do something good for another. It may seem a little idealistic, but doing good can essentially affect the entire world.

    • There are many different types of examples of doing good in the Bible. Other than Jesus feeding the hungry, he prayed for them and gave them words of encouragement. There are so many ways to do good for other people. If you have an elderly neighbor, you could bring over dinner once a week or you could offer to mow their lawn. If you know someone who just lost a loved one, you can spend time with them and just be there to listen. Whatever you are capable of doing--from small tasks to big ones-- performing acts of kindness toward those around you pays off in big ways.
