Proper Use of A-Frame Ladders

104 4

    Work Area

    • Only use A-frame ladders on dry, level surfaces. Do not use ladders in heavy wind. All four feet of the ladder should be on the ground. Do not set up ladders in front of unlocked doors. Never lean A-frame ladders against walls.

    Spreaders

    • Always fully extend and lock the spreaders before using an A-frame ladder. Spreaders hold the two sections of the ladder in a rigid position when locked, keeping it from collapsing. Do not use makeshift or homemade spreaders.

    Climbing the Ladder

    • Wear shoes with a good tread while using an A-frame ladder. Do not climb on the top two steps, and never sit or stand on the top of the ladder. Avoid leaning over to reach items; instead, keep your weight centered. Do not carry heavy items up or down A-frame ladders.

    Warning

    • Do not use metal A-frame ladders when performing electrical work, since this can cause electrical shock.
