A gemstone or a gem is a piece of crystallized mineral, occurring naturally, deep within the earth's crust. However certain rocks and organic materials are also considered as gemstones or gems because of their similar properties. They are further categorized on the basis of their rarity and other miscellaneous factors, such as color, inclusions and many more. They are further differentiated into precious and semi precious based on its rarity, astrological importance and market value. There are over two hundred recognized gemstones. Most are minerals and are cut from naturally occurring crystals.

Minerals and gems have been used for many different purposes throughout the ages. Different traditions ascribe different traits to them. They come from one unified source - Mother Earth. Created from the magma or Earth's inner core, these gemstones have gone through a geologic process of heating, cooling and displacement on their way to their present form. A magical and symbiotic connection has always existed between human beings and gems. Evidence of gemstones used for healing has been found as far back as the fourth millennium before Christ. Ancient civilizations such as the Chinese, Egyptians, Sumerians, Greeks, Romans, or Shamans and Medicine Men have used gemstones for healing in multiple ways - made into powders or elixirs, worn, carried or placed on the body and in ceremonies or rituals. This ancient knowledge has been passed down to our day and with the emerging popularity of holistic health and healing the use of gemstones is again making its way into modern life.

Since ancient times gemstones and crystals such as blue sapphires, yellow sapphires, rubies, emeralds and turquoises have been used for healing in a variety of different ways and can be found in the following 3 forms:

Rough gemstones are in their natural un-worked state as they were broken or mined from the living rock. Left in their natural condition the surface is irregular and rough and thus contains the greatest amount of healing power. They can be placed gently on the body to transmit and focus healing energies. Polished gemstones have been tumbled with water and sand thus giving them a smooth rounded surface. They are often used as touch stones and carried in a pocket or purse. Their smooth finish lends well to gemstone healing as they may be held, stroked, rubbed or placed directly on the body. Jewelry fashioned with healing gemstones also contains the stones vital energy. The precious metals and colors used in the design will also enhance the stones power. Gemstone jewelry can be created for particular health needs or to create harmonious vibrations and help with positive intentions for protection, prosperity, passion, recovery, clarity, love, good health, peace and other blessings.
