    • 1). Choose a short word, under four letters, and repeat it over and over to the bird. Speak in a loud, clear voice. Do this for 10 to15 minutes three times a day. Chet Hastings, author of "Training Your Cockatiel to Talk," recommends taking a four hour break between the lessons.

    • 2). Give the bird a treat when it says the word. A small sprig of millet spray is a favorite of birds, but if your cockatiel has a particular favorite, give him that.

    • 3). Say one word a session. Say the word clearly so he can hear each sound. Too many words confuse the bird. Hastings recommends using the same vocal pitch each time you say the word.
