The 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards won't be airing on television this year, but devoted soap opera fans will still be able to watch the ceremony.
The festivities, which will be hosted by actress/comedian Kathy Griffin, will stream live online at www.daytimeemmy.net on June 22, 2014. Red carpet coverage begins at 5pm EST/2pm PST; followed by the ceremony at 8pm EST/5pm PST.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) made the announcement, today.
“We are confident that the expert team we’ve brought on will flawlessly execute an evening that celebrates the outstanding talent being honored and allows fans to be a part of the action,” said Malachy Wienges, Chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, in a statement.
Unfortunately, NATAS was unable to negotiate a television deal for the 2014 award ceremony, as it had in previous years. The cable network HLN, which aired the show in 2012 and 2013, opted out, this year.
Back in January, David Michaels, Senior Executive Director of the Daytime Emmys, noted that other avenues were being explored to find "a broadcast home" for the show.
For years, the Daytime Emmy Awards telecasts alternated between ABC, CBS and NBC. However, as the ratings steadily declined, so too did the networks interest in broadcasting the ceremony. CBS last aired the show in 2011, before HLN picked it up in 2012.
While news of an online broadcast comes as no big surprise -- the Daytime Emmys haven't drawn big ratings numbers in over a decade -- it is disappointing that none of the networks that currently air soaps stepped up to broadcast the show.
After all, it is the industry's only big event of the year; the time when actors, producers, directors, etc. are recognized for their efforts.
The Daytime Emmy Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement in daytime television production, will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday, June 22.
