1. Know Your Car Choices
There are many car rental agencies in Barbados. Each of them offers a wide array of vehicles that are perfect for getting around the island. One of the rental options you will find is the Moke. This vehicle is like a convertible car and appears as a hybrid between a car and go cart. It is a common choice which tourists are inclined to trying out because it is not only the cheapest choice but it also can't be found in most other countries. There are also fully equipped sedans, SUVs and rental vans available.
2. Getting A Driver's License and Driving Experience
Before you can drive one of these Barbados car rentals, you will need to purchase a temporary local driver's license. Most Barbados car rental operators and companies offer these licenses at a charge of $10 BDS, making it easy to obtain and affordable. If the car rental agency you chose does not provide the driver's license, then you can visit a local police station to obtain the license.
This license is temporary and is typically good for a year's use. This will allow you to use it on your return to the island within a 365 day period since issue. A requirement to being issued the license is that you need to be at least 21 years old but not more than 65 years old. You will also need driving experience for at least 3 years, i.e. you have been issued a valid driver's license for 3 or more years.
It is best to bring your driving records with you, including your driver's license issued in your country of reference for counter checking. Aside from needing a local driver's license, you will also need to be aware of the rules imposed by the Barbados car rental operator themselves.
3. Higher Car Rental Rates For Those Under 25 Years of Age
The rates for Barbados car rentals are quite affordable as compared to other Caribbean destinations but some do charge higher fees for drivers between 21 and 25 years old for the same reasons why your car insurance company charge higher premiums. This additional fee is often referred to as a young drivers fee.
4. More Convenient Than Public Island Transportation
Having a rental car in Barbados is much more convenient than taking the local yellow or blue buses that you will see traveling the main coastal and town routes. These buses often take more than 10 minutes to arrive. The alternative white route vans operate much more frequently but can be cramped and quite an uncomfortable ride.
5. Cheaper Than Taking Taxi Cabs
Barbados car rentals will be much cheaper than taking taxi cabs throughout your vacation in Barbados. You will not find meters in these cabs and it therefore the rates vary based on the taxi drivers' discretion.
6. The Roads in Barbados Are Narrow
You must remember that Barbados has narrow roads some of which do not have a sidewalk. You therefore will need to be very aware of how much space you have between your car and oncoming traffic and will also find pedestrians walking on the road.
7. Stay On The Left And Buckle Up
Driving in Barbados is on the left so you should think twice if you have been right-driving for years. Never forget to fasten seat belts too since they are required throughout the island.
