Sharing the Road with Reckless Drivers

When you are driving, there are many things that affect the safety of your travel. Bad weather such as snow can make roads slick, while auto defects like flawed tires can put you at risk for a blowout. However, as you drive, you are also reliant on other people nearby to drive safely. If you are sharing the road with reckless drivers, it can result in reckless driving car accidents.

Every driver is responsible for learning and following the rules of the road. This means driving according to both posted signs, such as speed limits, as well as more "unspoken" rules of the road such as no following too closely, or tailgating. Sometimes, though, drivers forget or simply flout these rules, instead choosing to speed, tailgate, and otherwise drive recklessly.

Unfortunately, reckless drivers are very dangerous. Not only do they place others in harm's way, but they are also unpredictable. They may swerve from lane to lane with complete disregard for other people. Other types of reckless driving include:

  • Driving aggressively

  • Failing to use blinkers to indicate lane changes

  • Driving while intoxicated

  • Driving while under the influence of drugs

  • Driving while fatigued

  • Allowing distractions in the vehicle, such as eating while driving

  • Texting while driving

  • Failing to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, like coming close to sideswiping other cars

  • Running red lights

Frustratingly, there is not much you can do about a reckless driver. Some police departments have an information phone line that you can call to report the incident, but law enforcement officials may not be able to catch the reckless driver doing anything illegal. Instead, if you suspect a reckless driver, you should try to move over so that you are as far away from the person as possible.

Sometimes, though, reckless drivers can cause serious accidents. If you have been hurt in a reckless driving accident, you should fight back to discourage future recklessness. To discuss your case, contact a tenacious Iowa reckless driving accident attorney from LaMarca & Landry, P.C., today.
