What Happened to the Top Serbian Tennis Players?

What seems like a long time ago was only the year 2008.
Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open, Ana Ivanovic won the French Open and Jelena Jankovic finished as the #1 player on the WTA tour.
Serbian tennis looked great.
However, as we look at the beginning of 2010, the two top women are already out of the Australian Open and nowhere near the top in the rankings, and Djokovic has been relegated to subpar results.
All that Serbian promise is starting to filter out.
The most shocking in Ivanovic.
Here was this tall beauty with a killer forehand.
She made two Grand Slam finals before winning the French Open and becoming #1 in the world.
Now, she finds herself outside the top 20 with ball toss problems.
Jankovic has not been much better.
Although still in the top 10, her Grand Slam results have been lackluster.
She is the only one of the big three without a Grand Slam title, and another early exit to start 2010 shows she is pretty far away from ever winning one.
The lone male Djokovic is the only one to not fall completely off the map.
He's still ranked #3 in the world, but has failed to make another Grand Slam final since his 2008 breakthrough.
He has a favorable Australian Open draw, but will he ever get that 2nd Slam? The country of Serbia has been well documented as a place that went through turmoil when these early 20-year olds grew up.
All going elsewhere to make their skills better, they always have been revered in their tiny Eastern Europe country.
The window of top tennis though closes faster than most sports.
For the two women, can they ever recover from their cold streak? It's going to be tough, especially with the likes of Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters back.
Serbian tennis might not be as bright as it was just two short years ago, but there is still time to right the ship.
If Ivanovic and Jankovic can regain their previous form, they have both shown they can be #1 in the world.
Djokovic may never surpass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the rankings, but he is very capable of winning some more Grand Slams before he retires.
Let's hope all three Serb hopefuls can find the magic again.
