We all know that eating a healthy diet is important, but did you know that there are certain foods that help prevent wrinkles? With just a few changes in your diet, you could be taking some big steps to slow down the aging process and the progression of fine lines and wrinkles.
And the best part is these foods are not only good for your skin, but good for your whole body.
The first group of foods that prevent wrinkles is dark green, leafy vegetables, which consists of kale, spinach, swiss chard, mustard greens, and arugula, just to name a few of the common ones that are easy to find.
These vegetables contain lots of vitamins and minerals, as evidenced by their dark green color.
The most important of these, in regards to preventing wrinkles are vitamins A and C.
Both vitamins are strong antioxidants that will help get rid of free radicals which can be a cause of aging.
Vitamin A also helps strengthen the tissues that protect the skin.
Tomatoes are another of the foods that help prevent wrinkles, for more than one reason.
First, they contain vitamin C, which we have already seen is a strong antioxidant.
Second, they contain lycopene, which not only acts as an antioxidant, but also helps protect the skin from the effects of UV rays from the sun.
Lycopene is more abundant in cooked tomatoes, since heat breaks down the cell walls of the tomato and releases more lycopene.
Another food that should be added, to help prevent wrinkles is red peppers.
Red peppers contain large amounts of vitamin A and C, along with B6, which helps to promote healthy skin, in general.
Wakame, a type of kelp that grows in the seas around Japan and New Zealand has been a healthy addition to the Japanese diet.
Wakame is abundant in sodium, iron, potassium and calcium.
These minerals can help maintain the skin's moisture balance, and keep its appearance looking firm and healthy.
Wakame is also rich in B vitamins, which help to sooth and reduce inflammation of the skin.
Some skin care products actually contain an extract of wakame, called Phytessence Wakame.
Salmon and other oily fish, like mackerel, and sardines can help prevent wrinkles because they contain large amounts of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.
These "good" fats help to moisturize and lubricate the skin, and decrease inflammation.
Nuts are another food that can help prevent wrinkles because they are loaded with fatty acids and vitamin E, which helps prevent damage from UV rays.
Almonds, pecans and walnuts are best.
Olive Oil has anti-inflammatory properties, and is also an antioxidant.
It can be used in place of butter, for better overall health.
Olive oil can even be applied to the skin when it is dry and itchy.
I was surprised to find so many foods that can help prevent wrinkles.
So, now it's time to utilize one of the easiest ways to have younger more radiant skin.
Who knew you could fight the visible signs of aging, and have it taste so good.
