But just what are the best adjustable dumbbells? With so many to choose from all boasting superior capabilities, this can make the task of choosing just one extremely daunting, especially considering the price tags!
The two most popular brands in the current market are, without doubt, Bowflex and Powerblock, each one possessing a unique selling point over the other.
The Bowflex models are limited to just 2, being the SelectTech 552 and the SelectTech 1090's. These dumbbells work by the use of a docking station, of which you simply select your required weight resistance by the turning of a selector dial and remove the dumbbells from the station. Any weights not required will remain in their allocated positions within the docking station. The one disadvantage to this type of adjustable dumbbell is the fact that the dumbbell always remains at its maximum size, regardless of how small the selected weight resistance is. Another factor worthy of consideration is that, in order to operate effectively, these dumbbells need to be re-inserted into their docking station on a flat, solid surface, as failure to do so can result in the mechanism getting jammed. This can be overcome by purchasing the Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbell Stand, though a far cheaper alternative can be by utilising the shipping boxes that the dumbbells were supplied in!
The Bowflex SelectTech 552's have a weight range of between 5 and 52 lbs per dumbbell which can be incrementally adjusted by just 2.5 lbs. They replace the need for 15 sets of weight and are an excellent choice for anyone with a restricted training area.
The Bowflex SelectTech 1090's are for the stronger lifters and have a weight range of between 10 to 90 lbs per dumbbell which can be adjusted in 5 lb increments. These are an ideal choice for anyone looking to bulk up and are especially effective for targeting your lower body muscle groups.
The Powerblocks have a much more extensive range, incorporating the Urethane, Sports, and Classic Series. The weight resistance is changed on the Powerblocks by the use of a magnetic pin. The pin is simply removed from the current weight setting and re-inserted into the deired resistance. The selected weight is then removed from the main dumbbell body. The advantage of this design is that as your desired weight setting reduces, the dumbbell size reduces accordingly. This renders the Powerblocks smaller than the Bowflex due to them not requiring a docking station
The most popular of the Powerblock's range is the Classic, which includes the Classic 45 and Elite 90 adjustable dumbbells.
The Classic 45 adjusts from 5 to 45 lbs per dumbbell in 5 lb increments and replaces 9 pairs of dumbbells. These are an excellent choice for anyone wishing to follow any quick weight change fitness program.
The Elite 90 is adjustable from 5 to 90 lbs per dumbbell and replaces 28 pairs of normal dumbbells. One huge advantage of these dumbbells is the option to expand the weight resistance to 130 lbs by the purchasing of an Elite Big Block Kit.
