Chichen Itza When people think of Mayan ruins, they think of Chichen Itza.
The ruins at this location are some of the best preserved and most important in the ancient Maya history.
Because of its location, Chichen Itza is also one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world.
You should make it a point to visit the area when traveling to Cancun.
You can talk to your hotel staff about tours, or you can take a bus to Chichen Itza from the bus station in Cancun.
Tulum Tulum is a site that is very easy to get to and that you should visit.
From Cancun you only take one bus which leaves you in town very close to the beach.
The beach itself is very similar to the ones that you would find at your resort, but they tend to be less packed.
The waters are usually calm and have the same emerald green color, but the water is not the only attraction at the beach.
When you turn around it is possible to see "El Castillo" (The Castle) which is one of the latest cities built by the Maya before the Spanish conquest.
That makes for some of the best pictures you will ever take.
Cozumel The island of Cozumel is one of the most visited by cruise ships in Mexico and when you arrive you know why.
This is one of the best spots for diving and snorkeling in the area.
It is also possible to rent a scooter and go around the entire Island which is recommended.
There are some great Mexican beaches on the east of the island.
It is also recommended that you visit the ruins at San Gervasio which is right in the middle of the island.
Isla Holbox Isla Holbox is the place that you go to when you want to really relax and get away from it all.
It is quite possible that you will want to make it more than a day trip as it quickly becomes the favorite spot of those who visit it.
There are far fewer tourists here than in other areas and the beaches are empty and beautiful.
You will get the feeling that you have found paradise on earth.
Chicxulub Chicxulub is the furthest spot that you will read about here, but when discussing places in human history that are extremely important this should be on top of the list.
Without the events that took place in Chicxulub there is a good chance that none of us would be here.
This is the spot of the crater left behind by the meteorite that is believed to have killed the dinosaurs.
There is a lot of research still being done at the site, and the beaches are as beautiful as they get.
While you are in the area head to Merida for a few hours before you go back to home base in Cancun.
