Carpet Cleaning and Children

    Toxic Ingredients

    • Strong fumes from the solvents in commercial carpet cleaners can irritate a child's eyes or lungs. These cleaners can also leave behind chemical residues that can be inhaled or ingested, and trigger allergies or asthma in some children.

    Nontoxic Carpet Cleaners

    • Many carpet stains can be cleaned with nontoxic household products. A solution of baking soda and water can soak up grease stains. Other natural cleaning agents include club soda, vinegar, and mild dish detergent.

    • When using commercial carpet cleaners, be sure the room is well ventilated, and keep children from entering for several hours. Wide mats placed at your home's entry points can catch some of the outside dirt before it gets to your carpet, and to your children. Also, cleaning up spills as they happen will keep them from setting into the carpet.
